There is a sense that blogs are an inviting way of getting students to post their ideas.
But there are both advantages and disadvantages in blogging when comparing that to posting messages in an online discussion.
This is a very unscientific experiment to see if I get any responses or comments on this idea in this blog as against getting a discussion going in the online discussion.
So the question is what are the advantages and disadvantages as you see them in using blogs over using an online discussion?

I do appreciate the immediate feedback that an online discussion brings....I find that I do not tend to like to read through long (emphasis on long) blogs...
The blog is similar to a discussion board as we use in Blackboard...but I think it is easier to follow the layout of the Blackboard discussion board rather than the posting and subsequent comments on a blog...

Yes that is a very interesting comment and I think it applies in the online discussion as well - there is an inverse relationship between the length of a post and likelihood that it will be read and responded to.
Good thing to note. I wonder whether others think the same and maybe we can actually get someone to do a mathematical formula based on the number of words in a post - good PhD thesis research data gathering exercise.
I have started my own blog for this subject http://oet-joanne.blogspot.com/ because I find blogging a convenient way to organise my thoughts.
Blogging allows the author to “mash up” the content therefore responses can be in the form of podcasts, video, etc
I agree that reading long posts can be daunting but this also applies to discussion boards however, sometimes long posts may be necessary to fully explore an issue.
The Blackboard discussion board is definitely easier for a teacher to keep “under control” especially if posts are to be assessed. The “threading” of issues tends to keep posts to the point. With all the posts in one area it would definitely be easier to follow ideas rather than searching through the web of blog posts, comments, feeds etc from many students.
Up until now I have had no experience of either of these forms of communication online but like the idea of being able to respond to questions or pose questions online- the part i will find difficult is being succinct in what i want too say or what i want to ask>
